A couple of months ago The Old High Street underwent a bit of a transformation. After the dust cleared and the builders left, we were left with a beautiful cobbled street with freshly painted buildings filled with all manner of interesting things — from vintage and hand sewn clothes to vinyl and local gin and, of course, a few coffee shops.
Steep Street is behind a vibrant yellow and pink shop front and is arranged over two levels. With no more than ten tables or so, it is intimate and just as welcoming if you’re on your own or with friends.
Based on the book cafes of Paris, Steep Street is intended to be a meeting place for discussion, reading, writing, and, naturally, drinking great coffee. The books that line the walls are all for sale, but they are just as good picked up for a brief browse with an espresso con panna.
Alice and Steve Larkin, both originally from Hastings, achieved a lifelong dream when they opened Steep Street. And with fantastic small batch coffee, delicious homemade food, a warm welcome and books as far as the eye can see, I think they may have fulfilled my dreams as well.
