After the closing of Saltwood on the Green in 2017, I will admit to worrying what the fate of the building would be; it had been so wonderfully renovated, the ornate wooden dresser beautifully restored. Over the three years it was open, the restaurant had been a beacon of brilliance; at once a place of discovery and of comfort — and all within 15 minutes from our house. Art meets food meets community at Folkestone’s new restaurant in Harbour Arm.
Chef and artist Cherry Truluck and her team are all about bringing people together for great food and shared interests. Through Cherry’s imaginative menus, food-focussed artistic projects and a unique bartering system, Custom aims to make fantastic local food, and the pleasure of sharing it with others, available to everyone.
As with most of the seaside towns along the Kent coast, Ramsgate has been heralded as ‘up and coming’, the next big deal, the place where it’s all happening. On a drizzly, dark October night, I can’t say this is the impression I got. However, once we sat down at our table at Kyoto Sushi and Grill and started reading through the extensive menu, I began to think that maybe there was something about this town that was slightly ahead of the Kentish curve.
Not far from Canterbury High Street, in what was formerly a sticky floored boozer, is The Ambrette. Miles of dark wood meet the eye as you enter, punctuated by colorful floor tiles and the glow of candlelight. The cavernous room has been cleverly designed to feel cozy while still allowing enough space between the tables for comfortable conversation.
A couple weekends ago, in beautiful sunshine, we headed up to Margate to check out a new restaurant/art gallery for my second Olive magazine review. Hantverk & Found is the brainchild of chef Kate de Syllas, formerly of Unpackaged, and is a tiny four-table café serving up the freshest of Kentish seafood and promoting local artists in the equally tiny basement art gallery.
My mind is reeling. I’ve just got back from lunch at the Saltwood on the Green, a new restaurant offering Kent a rare taste of simple food, done exquisitely. Set in the picturesque village of Saltwood, just outside Hythe, it is exactly what I would hope for in a neighborhood restaurant: intimate and welcoming, but classy enough that it still feels a bit special.
Tomorrow our little Googies turns five. Over the past five years we have seen it evolve from a little café, to a café and craft beer destination, to a café, craft beer destination, music venue, ultimate coffee house and restaurant in its own right. To celebrate its birthday, owners Keith and Steve are raising the bar even higher.
Next week Googies will welcome into its kitchen a legend of the Kent culinary scene. Charlie Lakin has been doing fantastic things with Kent produce since he moved down to the southeast from Yorkshire to work at Dunkerley’s in Deal in 2007. From there he moved to The Marquis at Alkham where he’s really made a name for himself. Now he’s made the tough decision to leave The Marquis and Kent behind to pursue a more family oriented life in his wife’s native South Africa. Luckily for us, he is offering the people of Kent a few final chances to sample his handiwork at various venues around the southeast.
Many of you will have read my first post about Salt back in November of last year. The Canterbury restaurant has built a great reputation for itself and its philosophy of small plates and local, seasonal produce. With a ‘restaurants to try’ list that could circumnavigate the earth, we only managed to visit Salt a second time a couple weeks ago. As always, the food was fresh, interesting and delicious. We also caught word that Emma and Lee were looking into a new place in Whitstable. Saltdog opened yesterday and is cranking out gourmet hotdogs and beer on the Whitstable seafront. So now the lucky people of Kent have not one, but two ways to enjoy the creativity of this pair and the beauty of local Kentish produce. So what are you waiting for? Continue reading
Hello? HE-LLO-OO? Anyone there? I know I’ve been MIA recently, but I hope the world hasn’t moved on too much and that there’s still someone out there who wants to hear about another great place to eat in Canterbury! Over the last few weeks I’ve been here, there and back again − actually just to California and back, but you get my drift − and I’ve been doing a lot of eating and cooking, so I have lots to share! It’s just a matter of getting the time to sit down and write. First on the list is Café Mauresque in Butchery Lane in Canterbury which we visited way back in December.
