Yesterday was the opening, or technically reopening, of Folkestone’s Harbour Arm. As part of the harbour regeneration, the harbour arm has been brought back to life after more than a decade of disuse. The arm itself has been lovingly restored to reflect the important role it played during World War I.

When I first moved to the UK lots of people asked me if there was anything I would miss from California. I gave the obvious answers: family, friends, Californian zinfandel, sunshine. But it never even crossed my mind that there was something bound up in California’s identity that is nearly impossible to find in the UK: Mexican food.
Pork and Beer Stew
It’s the time of the month where I start rooting around in the freezer, pushing aside heels of year-old bread and tupperware dishes full of indistinguishable leftovers, searching for something to stretch our month’s food budget a bit further. During one of these excavations I discovered a couple packs of diced pork leg obviously bought from the corner of the supermarket where food goes to die, as evidenced from the yellow ‘reduced’ sticker clinging desperately to the side of the package – the scarlet letter of the nearly binned.

So when I was wandering the real ale section of Tesco on Friday, searching for inspiration among the run-of-the-mill ale selection that blights most supermarkets, who was to know that out of all beers I chose the one that would make the biggest impression would be from the Tesco Finest range.
